If you’re a Veteran who served on active duty or in the reserves in the U.S. Armed Forces and were separated under honorable conditions, you may be eligible for veterans’ preference, as well as other veteran specific hiring authorities. NOTE: Not all veterans qualify to receive veterans' preference for federal employment.

When applying for public notice announcements and claiming veterans' preference you MUST provide supporting documentation such as; legible copies of your DD 214 (Member 4 copy) which shows your character of service. If you are claiming veterans' preference due to a service connected disability. In addition to your DD 214 you will also need to provide a copy of your VA Disability Letter (dated 1991 or later) which shows your combined disability rating.

What to do to be prepared ahead of time:

Consider the types of jobs, location(s), work schedule(s), salary & travel requirements etc.;
Have copies of the following documents available on your computer, eventually you will want to upload these documents to your USAJobs profile so they are readily available when applying for federal jobs.

  • Resume(s);
  • Cover Letter;
  • College transcripts;
  • Applicable licenses or certificates.
